What does Demeter Biodynamic require?
Demeter goes past organic's list of banned inputs to a different idea: the farm should function as a closed living system. The farm makes its own fertility — compost from its own animals — rather than importing it. A tenth of the land is set aside for biodiversity. Animals are integrated into the cropping system, water cycles are managed, and the biodynamic preparations are applied on a seasonal calendar.
Everything USDA Organic prohibits stays prohibited; Demeter adds the requirement that the whole operation hangs together as an ecosystem, not a checklist of individual field practices.
Who audits it, and how often?
Demeter International and its national bodies (Demeter USA in the United States) certify farms through an annual inspection that typically runs two to three days on site — walking the land, checking the compost system, verifying the reserve. Compare that with the hours a standard audit takes and you see why so few farms hold it.
What does Demeter Biodynamic not cover?
Demeter is a farm standard. It does not score packaging, shipping distance, or company governance, and it will not tell you how the brand behind the product treats its office staff. It is also rare enough that you will mostly meet it on wine, dairy, and produce — its absence from a label says nothing bad; its presence says a lot.
