The movement

Every cart is a vote. Small choices have already moved big things.

You don't have to be perfect, and you don't have to do this alone. One better pick, made by a lot of people, can travel all the way back to a forest or a farm.

The full story
  1. You pickThe better one, the refill, the honest label.1 pickThis week, in one cart. It starts small.
  2. The shelf can shiftStores reorder what sells, and brands chase it.+28% vs +20%US sales growth over 5 years, with and without green claims. McKinsey and NielsenIQ, 2023.

It has already made a difference. Here are the receipts.

Campaigners, shoppers, buyers and rules all played a part. None of these is finished, and each one comes with its catch.

Forests · Amazon soy

Big buyers refused soy from cleared rainforest.

Share of new Amazon soy planted on freshly cleared forest
Before the 2006 pact30%
After itabout 1%

The catch: clearing for soy carried on in the neighboring Cerrado, and the traders' main group quit the pact in January 2026. The job isn't finished, so what buyers ask for still counts.

Gibbs et al., Science, 2015 · AP, Jan 2026

Forests · Palm oil

Certified plantations cleared less forest.

Forest lost per year on certified plantations in Indonesia
Expected without the label9.8%
With RSPO certification6.6%

The catch: most of these plantations had little forest left by then, and the label made no difference on peatland or fires. It helps most where forest still stands.

Carlson et al., PNAS, 2018

Farms · Organic

Organic fields hold more life.

30%more species on average than conventional fields, across 94 studies. Plants, pollinators and birds gain the most.

The catch: organic yields run about 25% lower on average, or 13% with the best practices, and most of these studies come from Europe and North America.

Tuck et al., J. Applied Ecology, 2014 · Seufert et al., Nature, 2012

People · Fair trade

Fair trade puts money where the crops grow.

€201.6Min Premium earned by groups of 1.87 million farmers and workers in 2024, on top of the price. They vote on how to spend it.

The catch: this is Fairtrade's own figure, and Premium isn't take-home pay. Certified also doesn't mean free of child labor or deforestation.

Buying a green brand doesn't make a whole company green, and a new owner can change a product. That's why greenspecs grades each product, not the logo on the parent company.

What you get

Skip the homework. Keep the good stuff.

We read the label and the public record, so you don't have to look it all up. Every check leaves you knowing a little more about what you buy.

What's real
The claim that holds up.Like a certification from an outside auditor, with what it actually covers.
Not on the label
What the pack skips.Like nothing about worker pay, or a bottle that says little about where it goes next.
Worth knowing
The word worth decoding.Like "cold extracted", which can be standard for that kind of oil, not a special extra.

Five signals, 20 points each

  • ClaimsHow specific the words on the pack are. A claim you can check beats a word like "natural".
  • CertificationsMarks from outside auditors, weighted by how much each one checks.
  • PackagingWhat the pack is made of, and where it really goes after.
  • IngredientsWhat is inside, and how it was grown, caught or made.
  • Supply chainWhat is known about where it comes from. A label rarely shows this, so it draws on the brand and category.

What you buy
adds up. greenspecs helps you choose.

Two labels can use the same green words. Scan a product and see what's behind it.

the real extension
The education place

Know what the labels actually mean.

Each one promises something specific. Once you know what, the whole shelf reads differently, and you take that with you everywhere you shop.

How grades work, and where they stop

A grade is a start, not the last word.

How it works. We read the label or listing, then add what is publicly known about the product and its maker. A brand cannot edit, hide or buy its grade.

What's missing. Most of what matters is not printed on a pack, so every grade shows its confidence. Estimates carry a ~ and gaps say "not disclosed".

The limits. The extension runs on the shops we support, not every site yet. A photo or a typed search covers the rest. For stores on our Shopify app, USDA Organic and Leaping Bunny are checked against public lists and a person checks B Corp. Other marks are read from the label, and not found is not false.
